ten trees are planted
for every item purchased

Protect the World You Play In

Core Values

Positive Impact- we believe in our ability to make active change. We aim to be a positive force on this planet. Not just to reduce the negatives, but make meaningful change. We do this, ten trees at a time.

Authentically Rooted- we strive to be authentic and transparent in everything we do. We are passionate about educating our supporters and work hard to keep things clear and simple. We want you to be informed about all the benefits of your product.

Collective Consciousness- we believe our obligation to sustainability extends beyond environmental protection. We aim to foster a collective mindset, starting to put “we” ahead of “me”.

Pillars of Impact

Our impact is defined by four key pillars; Planting, Community, Manufacturing, and Ecosystems:

Planting- our commitment to planting is simple - ten trees for every item sold. That said, our goal is to ensure that ten trees survive for every item sold. Historically, our planting projects experience up to 90% survival so we plant extra trees to ensure we stay true to our commitment of ten trees.

Community- by planting trees, you are providing jobs, enriching impoverished communities, providing food and shelter, and supporting long-term environmental education. Tree planting is meant to be a long-term strategy to support communities and not foster dependence.

Manufacturing- we partner with socially responsible manufacturers that agree to adhere to our code of ethics. This includes fair wages, safe working environment, minimum age requirements, and more.

Ecosystems- trees have an incredible impact on the ecosystems around them. They provide habitats for wildlife, prevent soil erosion, consume carbon dioxide, and more!

Our Process

Ever wondered how your purchase plants ten trees?

Partnerships- partnerships are the foundation for our impact. By partnering with incredible organizations across the globe, we are able to ensure that the tree planting has a meaningful, long-term impact. As well, we are able to ensure these trees are planted in a sustainable, timely manner.

Preparation- every project is different in how the trees are prepared for planting. In Madagascar, villagers are tasked with collecting propagules from existing mangrove trees in order to count and sort them. In Senegal, farmers are empowered to create their own forest gardens by being provided with the tools, seeds, and oversight. In Nepal, we fund nurseries which can be used to grow 10’s of thousands of trees at a time.

Planting- when the time is right, these propagules or seedlings are taken to an area that has been prepared for planting. Before any trees are placed in the ground, the area is cleared of debris or anything else that might damage the tree. The local villagers are then employed to plant the trees.

Protection- it is our top priority to make sure that the effects of deforestation do not return. In order to do this, we focus on empowering the local communities to protect their newly planted forests. This is done several ways including hiring guards (usually to protect from animals but also illegal logging), educating the locals on the importance of tree planting, teaching sustainably harvesting techniques, and more.

Eco Materials

We believe that our commitment to sustainability extends beyond planting trees. In fact, it is woven (pun intended) into everything we do. Every tentree item is made using a blend of sustainable fabrics. Here, you will find a few examples of some of the environmentally progressive fabrics we use in our products. Whether it is organic cotton, recycled polyester, cork, or coconut; you can feel good about how your product is made, and what it is made with!

Coconut Buttons

Not only do they look amazing, coconut shell buttons are a durable and sustainable alternative to petroleum-based, plastic buttons. Coconut buttons are made from the natural by-product of coconut shells and are used on our button ups, henleys and more.

Hemp

Hemp is one of the most sustainable natural fibers on the planet. Grown without the use of any pesticides or herbicides, our hemp blends are some of the softest pieces you will ever own. The fibers are incredibly strong, naturally anti-microbial and UV resistance. Perfect for a hike up the mountain or relaxing by the campfire.

Cork Trims

In an effort to create an even more environmentally progressive product, we introduced cork trims. By stripping the bark from sustainably grown cork trees, it promotes growth and increases the lifespan of the tree. Cork is used instead of leather on our patches, drawcord tabs, zipper pulls, and more!

Organic Cotton

All of our Cotton is certified Organic meaning that you can have the confidence that it was grown without the use of any harsh chemicals or pesticides. Conventional Cotton uses more insecticides than any other major crop. Research has shown that this can cause many adverse effects on the soil, water, air, and more. Our commitment to Organic Cotton has helped prevent the use of tonnes of chemicals, which helps reduce the impacts on the environment.

Recycled Polyester

The use of Recycled Polyester instead of virgin polyester is dramatically better for the environment with estimates as high as 75% reduction in CO2 emissions to create than virgin polyester. Our Recycled Polyester is made using recycled bottles and/or PET manufacturing waste that is turned into useable polyester fibers. The use of recycled polyester reduces our dependence on new petroleum based products and is a major step forward in creating a globally sustainable clothing industry.

TENCEL™ Lyocell

In our opinion, TENCEL™ Lyocell is the most progressive fiber available! The material comes from eucalyptus trees, which are fast growing, require no pesticides or insecticides, and need 1/5th of the land to make the same amount of fabric as cotton. The yarn manufacturing process is fueled by 100% renewable energy and uses 80% less water than conventional fibers. To learn more, check out Lenzing.

Modal

Modal is a bio-based fiber that is made by spinning reconstituted cellulose from beechwood trees. The trees are a completely natural and sustainable source of raw material as the beechwood forests self-rejuvenate. Modal’s natural composition doesn't trap body heat or perspiration, making it ideal for moderate and leisure activities. The end result is a fabric that is breathable and incredibly soft.

Linen

This plant-based fiber is made using the entire flax plant. Our linen is blended with organic cotton creating a fully biodegradable fabric; the flax we use requires no pesticides, minimal water and low impact dyes. Eco-linen is also breathable and lightweight to keep you cool in the heat of summer.

Manufacturing

Each product we offer is a reflection of our unwavering values and
guarantees our customer will feel good about their purchase.

At tentree, manufacturing is one of the key areas where we pursue social equity and environmental sustainability. It is a widely held belief that the garment manufacturing industry is oppressive and irresponsible. Not only do we believe that we are capable of changing this; we believe that it is our responsibility to do so. To make a broad sweeping statement that tentree will avoid all international production is to accept that there are issues that cannot be fixed. Instead, we work to change the apparel industry through transparency, dedication, and diligence.

tentree works to promote fair labour practices and safe working conditions throughout the supply chain. We only work with socially and environmentally responsible factories that are WRAP approved, agree to yearly unannounced audits, and abide by our code of ethics. The factories we work with commit to fair hours of work, absolutely no child labour, fair compensation based on local laws, a safe and healthy workplace, and adherence to environmentally conscious practices.

We have worked to ensure that our environmental footprint is minimized throughout the supply chain by only working with factories that can source product from the local region. By doing this, we have shrunk our overall environmental impact and reduced approximately 15% of the pollution through shipping.

It is our goal at tentree to work with facilities across the globe to encourage environmental stewardship and socially responsible behaviour. As we further develop our supply chain, we will continue to update this information to ensure every consumer can feel good about the product they're purchasing. With every piece of tentree apparel purchased, you are not only supporting the planting of ten trees; you are also showing your support of responsible manufacturing.

Tree Planting

We want to help change lives.

Planting Trees, Changing Lives

At tentree, we're focused on more than just planting trees. We want to help change lives. Not only does reforestation revitalize dry arid soil and provide a substantial oxygen supply, but it directly benefits locals living in the area by providing wood for fuel, food, and fodder for livestock, as well as permanent and seasonal employment. We have partnered with not-for-profits across the planet to ensure tentree has a truly global footprint, and can identify the regions that will benefit most from our planting

Ten trees can have an incredible impact on the ecosystems we plant in. All trees planted are local species, often times in some of the harshest regions. We use "pioneer" species to ensure survival and aim to plant in areas that have the greatest need. This includes Madagascar, where mangrove forests have been devastated, leaving locals with infertile farm land and completely wiping out thriving ecosystems, and Ethiopia, where entire forests have been cut down. This has left the population subject to the effects of flooding, resulting in much of the remaining farmland washing away.

Everyone can relate to the need for tree planting and the incredible impact it can have on the environment; an impact that does not simply end once the ten trees have been planted.

The numerous social and environmental benefits of each tree planted will likely outlast any tentree product purchased. Not only do the trees live for 20-30 years, but they also propagate seedlings which in turn grow into more trees. This is the reason ten trees can make such a difference. For every item sold, these trees will benefit the region for centuries to come.
